Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 15

Jim Thorpe’s boys and girls basketball teams both posted wins on Saturday.

The Lehighton and Panther Valley boys also gained victories, as did the Marian, Palmerton, Northwestern and Tamaqua girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Western Wayne-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe raced to a big halftime lead and cruised to a 45-27 non-league victory over visiting Western Wayne.

Derryl Fisher scored all of his game-high 15 points during the first two quarters as the Olympians jumped out to a 38-11 advantage.

Thorpe, which has won five of its last seven games, also received eight points from Josh Spruill and seven from Kaiden Herron.

Northwestern-Lehighton

Joe Roth scored all of his game-high 15 points in the second half to help Lehighton hold off Northwestern for a 45-29 non-league victory.

The Indians led by five points after three quarters before Roth exploded for 11 points in the final period to help his team outscore their opponent by a 17-6 margin.

The winners, who improved to 3-11, also received 12 points from Jack Lorenz and 10 from Mason Costenbader.

The struggling Tigers, who have lost three straight and are now 6-6, were led by Gavin Nelson’s eight points.

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Weatherly couldn’t overcome a fast start by Schuylkill Haven and eventually dropped a 49-39 Schuylkill League decision.

Travis Richie scored nine of his gane-high 15 points in the opening period as the Hurricanes raced to a 24-11 advantage.

The winners also received 12 points from Nigel Kuzanga, while the Wreckers (1-6; 0-3) received a team-high 13 points from Frankie Willis. Weatherly’s Timmy Maguschak also chipped in with 10 points.

Panther Valley won its third game in a row, cruising to a 59-30 non-league victory over visiting Hamburg.

Stephen Hood had a double-double for the Panthers, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Drew Kokinda added 14 points, including nine in the first quarter as PV jumped out to an 18-3 lead.

Panther Valley, which improved to 6-5, also received eight points from both Chase Weaver and Bradley Hood.

Emmaus pulled away from Pleasant Valley early and coasted to a 63-35 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Jadis Brevitt scored all nine of his points in the first quarter as the Green Hornets opened up a 17-6 advantage. Dylan Darville collected seven of his 11 points in the second frame as the winners extended their lead to 25 by halftime.

Brydon Crawford paced Emmaus with 18 points, while the Bears received a team-high nine points from Austin Ratti.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Weatherly-Marian

Marian hit 13 three-pointers, including six by Carly Minchoff, in rolling to an 85-27 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Minchoff scored 21 of her game-high 26 points in the first half as the Fillies built a 52-9 halftime lead.

Ashley Pleban contributed 18 points to the win, while Kerrigan Digris added 16 and Fatikha Tikhtova finished with 15. The Wreckers received eight points from both Emma Kane and Bethany Houser.

Marian improved to 9-3, and Weatherly dropped to 3-8.

Lake-Lehman-Jim Thorpe

Skyler Searfoss scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to help Jim Thorpe rally for a 44-29 non-league victory over Lake-Lehman.

The Olympians trailed by four points entering the final frame, but used a 22-3 period to remain undefeated.

Searfoss finished with a game-high 21 points, while Leah Snisky, Olivia Smelas and Mackenzie Yuhas all chipped in with six points.

The win lifted Thorpe’s record to 11-0.

Northwestern ran its win streak to seven with a 41-38 non-league victory over Lehighton.

Paige Sevrain had 16 points for the Tigers (12-3) in a game that was tied 21-21 at half and 29-29 after the third quarter. Cara Thomas added 10 points in the win, while Rachel Dorney scored nine.

Hailey Miller scored eight of her 14 points in the fourth quarter for the Tribe (4-6). Aaliyah Fisher hit four 3s and finished with 12 points.

Jill Morro had 18 points for the Green Knights (7-7). Ellie Wallbillch scored 10 points.

Serena Jones and Trenyce Wingler both scored 16 points for the Blue Raiders, who led 17-2 after the opening quarter.

The winners, who improved to 5-6, also received 11 points from Lorelei Plasha, while McKenna Meckes chipped in with nine.

For the Miners, Keera Brennan tallied a team-high 10 points.

Panther Valley-Hamburg

Panther Valley got the early jump on host Hamburg, but the Hawks used a big second frame to help gain a 53-32 non-league victory.

Maddison Maynard netted eight of her game-high 22 points in the first period as the Panthers gained a 14-11 lead, but Lauren Sterner scored nine in the second as Hamburg outscored PV by a 24-6 margin.

Panther Valley (1-9) also received eight points from Mikayla Yuricheck, while Sterner finished with 15 to lead the Hawks.

Emmaus pulled away from Pleasant Valley to claim a 51-31 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Kameron Watkins hit four three-pointers during the middle quarters to help the Green Hornets extend a two-point first quarter lead to a 13-point margin entering the final frame.

Watkins ended with a game-high 16 points, while Aryn Stivala finished with 14 to pace the Bears.

PV dropped to 6-4, and Emmaus upped its mark to 9-4.

Southern Lehigh offset an early deficit and gained a 41-24 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

The Blue Bombers led 12-7 after the first five weight classes, but two pins, three forfeits and a major decision put the Spartans ahead for good.

Palmerton (5-7) received pins from Dennis Lombardi (152), Josh Merkel (120) and Dillon Lombardi (126).

Tamaqua split its non-league meet with Saucon Valley.

The Raiders rolled to a 90-35 victory on the boys’ side, while the girls suffered a 100-69 setback.

Alex Zehner (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Jack Tharp (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) had multiple wins for the Tamaqua boys.

Lexi Buchala (200 freestyle) and Gabby Blasko (500 freestyle) posted event victories for the Raider girls.
