Two tractor-trailer rigs crashed along Interstate 81 in Hazle Township, Luzerne County, on Jan. 7 at 7:58 p.m. with both sustaining extensive damages.
State police at Hazleton said Colton R. Rohrbaugh, 24, of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, was driving a 1998 International tractor northbound between the two lanes due to a malfunction in his rig when it was struck in the rear by a 2016 Volvo tractor with trailer driven by William W. Herbert, 74, of Gilbert.
After impact Rohrbaugh’s rig hit the guide rail and came to rest in the right lane.
Herbert’s rig traveled about 500 feet and then jackknifed, blocking both lanes of travel.
Troopers said the Volvo and the two trailers it was pulling had disabling damages, including by fire. Herbert’s rig had disabling damages to the entire front end.
Both drivers suffered suspected minor injuries and were taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton campus.
Herbert was cited for the crash.
