Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 8

Tamaqua’s swimming team swept Salisbury on Saturday, while Northwestern and Pleasant Valley gained wins in both boys and girls basketball action.

Another weekend winner was the Palmerton girls.

SWIMMING

Salisbury-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept Salisbury in a weekend swim meet.

The Blue Raider girls posted a 112-45 victory over the Falcons, while the boys registered a 106-42 win.

Lexi Buchala (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Rylee Wenzel (50 and 100 freestyle) and Gabby Blasko (500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) all posted a pair of individual wins for Tamaqua in the girls meet, while Jathan Krall (200 and 500 freestyle), Jack Tharp (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Stephen Behun (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Brandon Long (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) did the same in the boys competition.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pleasant Valley-ES North

Jarod Moore scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to help Pleasant Valley rally for a 54-51 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

The Bears faced an 11-point deficit at halftime before gaining their comeback win.

Patrick Moore added nine of his 15 points in the second half, which saw PV outscore its opponent by a 33-19 margin.

The win upped the Bears record to 2-4.

Northwestern-Saucon Valley

Northwestern used a strong second half to earn a 42-31 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Cade Christopher scored eight of his 14 points during the final two quarters as the Tigers pulled away after ending the opening half tied at 23-23.

Dylan Witkowski also scored 14 points for the winners, who improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.

For the Panthers, Jacob Albert ended with a team-high 10 points.

Palmerton-Wilson

Wilson ended Palmerton’s winning streak by posting a 65-52 Colonial League victory.

The Blue Bombers had won seven games in a row before a slow start hurt them against the Warriors.

Shamel Gibson poured in a game-high 26 points for the winners, who raced to an 18-4 first-quarter lead, while Na’shawn Jones finished with 20.

Palmerton, which dropped to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the league, received a team-high 16 points from both Brayden Hosier and Matt Machalik. Chase Reph also contributed 12 points to the Bomber effort.

Northern Lehigh-Palisades

Liam Carey poured in a game-high 27 points to lead Palisades to a 62-36 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Pirates, who gained an 11-point halftime lead before pulling away in the second half, also received 11 points from Maki Modlin.

Izaiah Ramos paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 11 points, while Nick Frame added seven.

The loss dropped Nolehi to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the league.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Saucon Valley-Northwestern

A second-quarter explosion lifted Northwestern to a 56-18 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

After gaining a 7-2 first-quarter advantage, the Tigers used a 26-point second frame to put the game out of reach.

Paige Sevrain tallied seven of her game-high 17 points in the period to help her team improve to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the league.

Northwestern also received 14 points from Cara Thomas, while Brook Balliet chipped in with nine.

Wilson-Palmerton

Brianna Moore carried Palmerton in the first half, while Megan Matsko and Raegan Nemeth led the way in the second to help Palmerton earn a 52-42 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Moore scored 13 of her team-high 18 points during the first two quarters as the Blue Bombers took a narrow four-point lead into intermission.

Matsko and Nemeth both tallied 10 points over the final two frames to help keep the Warriors at an arm’s length.

Nemeth finished the contest with 13 points, while Matsko ended with 12.

The win keeps Palmerton undefeated at 9-0 overall and 8-0 in the league.

Wilson’s Briella Reidinger led all scorers with 22 points.

Aryn Stivala scored all of her game-high 16 points in the first half, including 10 in the opening quarter as the Bears opened up a 17-2 lead.

Sam Merklin contributed 12 points to the win, which lifted PV’s record to 4-2.

Karlee Feger scored 20 points to lead Schuylkill Haven to a 56-33 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Wreckers, who also received 20 points from Bethany Houser, trailed by just two points at halftime before the Hurricanes pulled away in the second half.

Weatherly, which dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the league, also received 12 points from Emma Kane.

WRESTLING

Jim Thorpe, Lehighton at Indian Duals (at Lehighton)

Lehighton went 2-3, while Jim Thorpe posted a 1-4 record at the annual Indian Duals.

The Indians and Olympians both defeated East Stroudsburg North, while Lehighton also posted a victory over Manheim Central. The Tribe almost finished with a winning record, but dropped a 35-34 decision to Whitehall.

Aiden Gruber went 5-0 for Lehighton, including a pair of pins and a major, while Jake Hall was 4-0 with all his victories coming by fall. Wyatt Sherer also posted a 4-1 record, with all four wins by pin. Jake Ferguson finished the tourney with a 3-2 mark, with Luke Ferguson and Reese Balk each adding a pair of falls.

For Thorpe, Cam Tinajero went 5-0 with three pins and a major. Jared Newhall and Gabe Heaney both registered 4-1 records, with Newhall posting three falls. Among Heaney’s wins were a pin and a major. Henry Snyder went 3-2 with a couple pins, while Ridge Snyder also was 3-2 with a technical fall and a major.

Honesdale’s team finished 5-0, while Cedar Cliff was 4-1.

No. Lehigh at Mats on the Mecca

Northern Lehigh took part in the Mats on the Mecca in Pottsville.

The Bulldogs ended the tournament with a 2-3 record.

Matt Frame (215) and Sam Frame (285) both posted 4-1 records for the Bulldogs, while Trey Dieter (106), Austin Rex (126) and Chase Moffit (172) all registered 3-2 marks.

The Bulldogs earned wins over Mahanoy Area (51-6) and ES South (34-30) and dropped setbacks to Northern Lebanon (61-9), Pottsville (64-6) and Ephrata (48-25).

Palmerton at Line Mountain Duals

Dennis Lombardi went a perfect 5-0 for Palmerton at the Line Mountain Duals.

The Bombers’ 152-pounder posted two pins, two decisions and earned a forfeit in his five matches.

Kellen Trotter (106) went 4-1, receiving three forfeit wins, while Jeremy Mooney was 2-1.

The Blue Bombers finished 2-3 as a team with victories over Pequea Valley (42-30) and PM West (44-30).

Their losses came to Mount Union (68-6), Line Mountain (42-27) and Wyalusing (62-10).

Pleasant Valley at S. Williamsport Tournament

James Syracuse scored a pin in the finals of the 189-pound match to highlight Pleasant Valley’s third-place finish at the South Williamsport Tournament.

Syracuse’s first-place finish led the way for a number of PV medalists.

Aldin Vukel (132), Josh Griffith (138) and James Borruzza (215) all posted fourth-place finishes, while Jason Schubert (189) added a sixth-place finish.

Thomas Lovito (145), Aaron Nonnemaker (160) and Andrew Mihalichko (285) all placed seventh in the tournament.

Tamaqua at Hawk Mountain Duals

Tamaqua finished with a 4-1 mark at the Hawk Mountain Duals.

The Blue Raiders posted victories over Muncy (39-31), Hamburg (60-18), Bensalem (57-18) and Littlestown (51-24). Their only loss came to Faith Christian Academy (59-15).

Gabe Erbe (113) and John Buday (189) paced the Blue Raiders with a 4-1 marks. Aiden Schlier (106), Levi Kunkel (106/113), Chase Zeigenfuss (120/126), Jacob Schlier (138/145) and Donovan Albert (215) all finished 3-1.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

8TH GRADE BOYS

Weatherly-MMI Prep

Weatherly cruised to a 68-2 victory over MMI Prep.

Corbin Wagner scored a game-high 15 points for the Wreckers, while Jacob Tom finished with 14. Aiden Buck and Nico Saldukis both contributed 10 points to the winning cause.

8TH GRADE GIRLS

Weatherly-MMI Prep

Weatherly cruised to a 49-12 victory over MMI Prep.

DeAnna Pugh finished with 37 points for the Wreckers, while Kelly Reiner added eight.
