Carbon Model Railroad Society to host open house

An organization devoted to model railroading will wrap up its open house schedule this week.

Carbon Model Railroad Society, 529 Ore St., Bowmanstown, will be open 7-9 p.m. Thursday, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

That will conclude the 2021-2022 holiday open house schedule, according to Carbon Model Railroad Society President Garry Mack.

Admission is by donation, said Mack, who added they have a “building full of model trains.”

Mack noted the organization is located in a retired Catholic Chapel, and added they put a second floor in the building, where they’ve been for the past 18 years.

“We have an HO operating scale on the first floor, on the second floor a couple of other displays that are running trains, have some model railroad items for sale,” Mack said. “We have members there to answer questions and help them navigate through the building.”

Mack said they are open twice a year, including the four weekends over the holidays. They are also open in July.

He said the nonprofit organization has two other major fundraising events during the year known as Train Meets (Model Railroad Sale) that are held at the Diamond Fire Company bingo hall in Walnutport.

“We are there to share in model railroading as a group, have a pretty good complement of model railroaders that are members,” he said. “We enjoy model railroading, and enjoy having people come and see our work and discuss it and encourage them to get in the hobby like it used to be.”

Mack said it’s a great group to be a part of.

“I enjoy the club, I enjoy the hobby,” he said. “I made a lot of new friends.”

Mack said they have supporting members in addition to acting members, and added they have about 60-70 members.
