The Marian, Jim Thorpe and Weatherly boys basketball teams cruised to easy victories on Wednesday.

In other basketball action, the Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua girls both recorded wins.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian-MMI

A 23-point second quarter outburst led Marian to a 63-36 non-league win over MMI.

Jose Espaillot-Turni scored seven of his 14 points in the Colts’ big quarter, while Frank Valente netted six of his game-high 18 points in the frame. Brendan Lonergan also finished in double figures for Marian with 12 points.

Ryan Sones recorded a Preppers’ team-high 12 points.

Jim Thorpe-Minersville

Kaiden Herron scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the second quarter to help Jim Thorpe build a lead and eventually gain a 55-34 non-league victory.

Derryl Fisher and Jasper DiSanto added three-pointers during Thorpe’s 17-5 second frame that gave the Olympians a 16-point halftime advantage.

Fisher finished with 11 points for Thorpe (4-3), while Christian Bradley chipped in with eight.

The Miners received a game-high 18 points from Lorenzo Yourey.

Weatherly-CMVT

Weatherly got off to a fast start and never looked back en route to a 52-34 non-league win over Columbia Montour Vo-Tech in the consolation game of the Columbia-Montour Tournament.

The Wreckers jumped out to a 17-point lead after one quarter as five different players scored. Timmy Maguschak led the way with seven points in the quarter.

Frankie Willis led Weatherly on the night with 15 points. Maguschak added 13.

Owen Panikkar was the lone Ram to hit double digits with 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Northampton

Jim Thorpe opened the Pocono Mountain West Tournament with a 60-43 victory over Northampton.

The Olympians jumped out to a great start thanks to a 21-point opening quarter and never trailed the rest of the way to earn a berth in the title game.

Leila Hurley led the opening quarter surge nine of her game-high 16 points. Skyler Searfoss added seven in the quarter and finished with15 points.

Leah Snisky also had a big game for the Olympians with 13 points.

Kylie Gilliard paced the Konkrete Kids with 14 points, while Nicole Yellon added 10 points.

Tamaqua rolled to a 54-23 non-league victory over Pottsville Nativity.

Serena Jones and McKenna Meckes paced the Blue Raiders with 14 points apiece.

Caelan Quick led the Golden Girls with eight points.

Tamaqua improved to 3-3 on the season.

Crestwood-Marian

Marian recovered from a slow start to take a second-half lead, but couldn’t hold on and dropped a 36-33 non-league decision to Crestwood.

The Fillies failed to score in the opening quarter and trailed by 11 points at halftime. They charged back in the third quarter, however, to take the lead only to see Crestwood stage a rally of its own to pull out the decision.

Ashley Pleban paced the Fillies’ with a game-high 15 points.

Julia Glowacki led the Comets with 10 points.

WRESTLING

Northwestern at

Beth. Holiday Classic

Northwestern left the Bethlehem Holiday Classic with three medal winners.

Dalton Clymer (160) had a fifth-place finish for the Tigers, Lucas Miller (172) grabbed a sixth-place medal, and Noah Schlofer had a seventh-place finish.

Nazareth won the team title, while Phillipsburg ended up in second place. Northwestern finished in 22nd place.

Palmerton at

Gov. Mifflin Tournament

Palmerton ended day one at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament in 15th as a team with a total of 34 points. Cape Henlopen leads the way in first place with 119 points, while Malvern Prep maintains the second spot with 109 points.

The Bombers’ Dennis Lombardi went 2-0 on the day to reach the semifinals. He recorded a decision and a pin.

Meanwhile, Kellen Trotter (106) and Derek King (132) return for another day in the consolation rounds. Trotter went 1-1, while King was 2-1.
