Overheated motor cause of fire at hospital

A fire in an elevator maintenance room at the St. Luke’s Hospital Lehighton Campus was quelled within minutes Wednesday afternoon.

Borough fire Chief Pat Mriss said firefighters responded at 1:30 p.m. to the hospital at 211 N. 12th St., where they met maintenance on scene and found they had smoke in an elevator maintenance room.

“The fire was extinguished within five minutes; it was a motor,” Mriss said. “The rest of that was trying to evacuate smoke since it was in the middle of the building.”

Mriss said the cause was an overheated motor.

“There was no damage past the motor as far as fire damage,” he said. “It was all contained to the elevator motor.”

Mriss said there were no injuries.

He said Lehighton Fire Police assisted at the scene.
