Carbon County veterans’ organizations gathered recently to recognize several individuals for their service to the community.
During the annual Commanders Dinner, held at the Lehighton American Legion, Robert Paul of the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 was named this year’s Veteran of the Year by the Carbon County Veterans Council.
“I nominated Bob Paul for Carbon County Veteran of the Year because of all he will do for his VFW Post 8008 by setting up for events and taking a majority of the responsibility for the post,” said Rudy Balas, Vietnam Veterans of Carbon County commander.
“He held numerous positions with our Vietnam Veterans of Carbon County Post including a past commander.
“When our VVOCC group has a function that includes the rifle volley he provides the rifles from the VFW Post and brings the flags. He has provided us with the use of the VFW post banquet hall for our meetings every six months. We rotate to different Legion and VFW post every three months.
“Bob is a great volunteer helping these organizations for all occasions. It was my pleasure to put his name into nomination for county veteran of the year,” Balas added.
In addition to Paul, Carla Moyer was named Non-Veteran of the Year, while Glen Troutman, Richelle Schafer and George Stoffa were recognized for their dedication to the community.
Christine LeClair, Carbon County Veterans Affairs director, said that the dinner is held annually.
