Police detail Hazleton officer’s burglary charge

State Police at Frackville have charged a Hazleton police officer with burglary, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking at 3 Center St., Kelayres, the address where the explosive device detonated outside Tuesday.

Charges were filed Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they were sent to the address Oct. 28 for the report of a burglary in progress. The man who is the victim and was injured during the explosion, according to an affidavit of probable cause, saw a man inside his apartment on his security video.

Police went inside but were unable to find anyone. The police say Ladell Emery Hannon was identified as the man on the video by comparing his driver’s license photo.

They said he was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and dark cargo pants and black gloves during the burglary when he took a security camera and picture frame.

The victim refused to cooperate at the time, so the investigation was closed.

However, with the explosion Tuesday the burglary investigation was reopened. The victim identified Hannon as the man on the video, saying he had a verbal altercation with him Dec. 11 and has seen him five to 10 times in the past year.

The victim is involved in a relationship with Hannon’s wife, documents state.

Trooper Daniel Phillips interviewed a Hazleton Police lieutenant who said the pants Hannon was wearing are “similar or accurately represent ones that are issued to Hazleton City Police Officers.”

Hannon is in Schuylkill County Prison on $300,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for noon Jan. 4 in Magistrate Stephen Bayer’s office, Tamaqua.

The Hazleton Police Department released a statement saying Hannon was suspended without pay. The department said it was “shocked” to learn about his involvement in the case.

“Officer Hannon was an upstanding member of our department and never had a complaint filed against him while we worked for the Hazleton Police Department.”

Police are still investigating the explosion.
