Nesquehoning VFW names firefighter of the year

Every year, the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 recognizes individuals who are dedicated to the community.

Recently, the organization named Kevin Steber of Summit Hill as this year’s firefighter of the year.

A native of Summit Hill, Steber has been a volunteer firefighter for 32 years, holding various positions within area fire departments. He currently serves as the safety officer in the Diligence Fire Company No. 1 in Summit Hill.

When not serving as a volunteer firefighter, Steber is involved as an emergency management coordinator for Summit Hill and as a deputy emergency management coordinator for the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency.

“When you first join emergency services, you don’t do it for recognition,” Steber said. “You do it because you want to help the people. That’s what I have done for the last 32 years of my life.

“It is great to be recognized for that,” he added before thanking the VFW for the award.

Steber is the son of Manny and Jane (Lisella) Lanzos of Summit Hill and has been the husband of Kira (Michalik) for the last eight years. He has one daughter, Kacy, and a beagle named Gracie.
