Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 18

Marian and Palmerton both posted multiple wins in basketball action over the weekend.

The two Blue Bomber teams defeated Saucon Valley, while the Colts and Fillies downed Lincoln Leadership Academy.

Jim Thorpe received a win from its girls team, while its wrestling squad went undefeated at the Meadowbrook Christian Duals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lincoln Leadership Academy-Marian

A balanced scoring attack helped Marian pull out a 43-41 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

The Colts, who improved to 2-1, received a team-high 11 points from Jose Espaillat Turbi. Frank Valente contributed 10 points to the win, while Logan Fritz and Brendan Lonergan both finished with eight. Lonergan also collected seven rebounds.

Marian, who trailed by four points at the break, outscored its opponent by a 14-7 margin at the foul line to help produce the victory.

For the Lions, Michael Richardson tallied a game-high 17 points.

Saucon Vy.-Palmerton

Palmerton used a big third quarter to pull away from Saucon Valley and eventually gain a 51-20 Colonial League victory.

Matt Machalik scored five points in the third frame as the Blue Bombers used an 18-4 period to turn a seven-point lead into a convincing advantage.

Chase Reph led the winners with a game-high 13 points, while Machalik ended with 10. Palmerton (2-2) also received eight points from both Brayden Hosier and Zack Anthony.

The Panthers received a team-high eight points from Alex Magnotta.

Xavier Spears scored 23 points and Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg pulled away down the stretch to gain a 65-55 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders battled the undefeated Spartans (4-0) tough throughout the contest, trailing by just four points entering the final quarter.

Tamaqua’s Connor Dillon, who hit five three-pointers, matched Spears for game-high honors with 23 points. The Raiders, who dropped to 1-4, also received 13 points from Nate Gregoire.

In the JV game, Tamaqua posted a 57-32 win.

Kutztown hit 16 free throws in the final quarter to help pull away from Lehighton for a 62-46 non-league victory.

Xavier Goodman went 9-of-10 at the charity stripe in the fourth frame as the Cougars, who led by just six points entering the period, finished with 25 points in the quarter.

Goodman ended up with a game-high 22 points, while Grant Fitzgerald - who hit five three-pointers - tallied 20.

The Indians (0-4) received a team-high 17 points from Jack Lorenz. Mason Costenbader also reached double figures, collecting 13 points.

Christopher Cuff scored a team-high 10 points for the Golden Bears, who also received five fourth-quarter points from Ben Manley to help secure the win.

The Olympians, who dropped to 2-1, were paced by Derryl Fisher’s 11 points. Thorpe’s Kaiden Herron also chipped in with nine points.

Pottsville outscored visiting Northwestern in every quarter en route to a 63-30 non-league victory.

Jazce Carabello-Snowell scored a game-high 19 points for the Crimson Tide, who built a 17-point advantage by halftime.

The winners, who also hit 10 three-pointers in the contest, also received 12 points from Mike Sukeena.

For the Tigers, who suffered their first loss and dropped to 3-1, Dylan Witkowski tallied a team-high 12 points.

Jim Thorpe-Riverside

Five different Jim Thorpe players scored in double figures as the Olympians defeated Riverside, 66-44, in a non-league contest.

Olivia Smelas finished with a team-high 18 points, with 14 of them coming in the first half as Thorpe raced to a 39-18 lead.

Leila Hurley contributed 16 points to the win, while Skyler Searfoss and Leah Snisky both finished with 11. The Olympians, now 2-0 on the season, also received 10 points from Mackenzie Yuhas.

The Vikings were led by Kylie Lavelle’s 18 points.

A big fourth quarter by Lehighton sealed its first victory of the season, as the Indians recorded a 60-39 non-league decision over Kutztown.

The Tribe held a seven-point advantage entering the final frame, but Charli McHugh hit for eight points during a 23-point period to help the host team pull away for the win.

McHugh finished with a team-high 19 points while Taylor Bowman, who contributed six points in the fourth, finished with 13. The Indians (1-2) also received 12 points from Aaliyah Fisher and 10 from Hailey Miller.

The Cougars’ Ky Brantley led all scorers with 28 points.

Marian jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 65-12 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

Frankie Martinelli scored eight of her 12 points in the opening quarter as the Fillies built a huge 23-4 advantage.

Nine different Marian players hit the scoring column. Martinelli led the way, while Aliya Tikhtova and Fatikha Tikhtova both finished with 10.

The winners, who improved to 3-1, also received eight points from Taylor Walsh and Kerrigan Digris.

The Blue Bombers, who improved to 4-0, received two three-pointers from Sydney Frantz in the second quarter to help pull away and take a 17-point halftime lead.

Brianna Moore, who had six points in the opening frame, finished with a game-high 17 points for the winners. Hannah Barry contributed 12 points, with nine of them coming in the second half, while Frantz ended with eight.

The Panthers received a team-high 13 points from Allison Cort.

The Tigers, who led after the first quarter, managed just two points during the final period. The Tide, meanwhile, received six points from Julia Kowalksi in the frame to help secure the win.

Kowalski finished with 17 points, while teammate Jules Plachko chipped in with 10.

For the Tigers, who fell to 3-2, Paige Sevrain tallied a team-high 17 points.

WRESTLING

JT at Meadowbrook Christian Duals

Jim Thorpe went 5-0 to win the Meadowbrook Christian Holiday Duals.

The Olympians posted victories over Central Columbia (60-7), Mount Carmel (39-33), Loyalsock (57-9), Meadowbrook Christian (60-12) and Northeast Bradford (66-6).

Ridge Snyder had three pins for Thorpe during the tournament, while the Olympians received a pair of falls from Nikolas Schwartz, Richard Kenna, Caleb McDermott and Cam Tinajero.

Palmerton at

Carlisle Tournament

Dennis Lombardi had Palmerton’s highest finish at the 60th Annual Carlisle Wrestling Tournament, placing sixth at 152 pounds.

Lombardi reached the quarterfinals, but failed to advance to the semis. He then recorded a 10-5 victory in his first consolation bout and followed that up with a pin. The Blue Bomber, however, lost his final two decisions to take sixth in the 24-man bracket.

Caleb Gaffney, who won his opening match at 145 before losing his second, won a pair of consolation bouts by fall before losing his third consi match.

Derek King, at 138 pounds, also posted a pair of consolation round wins.

Northwestern at

X-Calibur Tournament

Northwestern’s Lucas Miller turned in a fifth-place finish at the X-Calibur Tournament at Wilkes-Barre High School.

The 172-pounder gained a technical fall before losing and being dropped into the consolations. Miller posted 1-0 and 4-2 decisions in the consis before falling again. He eventually pulled out a 6-5 decision in the fifth-place match.

The Tigers’ Noah Schlofer also reached the fifth-place match at 215, but was pinned and had to settle for sixth. Schlofer had three win in the tournament, one by fall and the other two decisions.

Dalton Clymer, at 160 pounds, placed seventh. After losing his opening match, he posted two pins and a technical fall before recording a decision in the seventh-place match.
