Local roundup: Results from Dec. 17

Northwestern’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams recorded victories on Friday night.

Jim Thorpe also picked up a win in boys’ basketball action, as did the Tamaqua girls’ swim squad.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Moravian Academy

Northwestern pulled away from Moravian Academy for a 53-29 Colonial League win.

Dylan Witkowski scored nine of his 17 points in the third quarter for the Tigers (3-0), who pushed their lead to 39-22 in the period. Cade Christopher scored nine points, and Cayden Fitch added eight.

Tayden Miller had nine points for the Lions (0-5).

Jim Thorpe won its second straight game to start the season, downing Lehighton 45-32 in Schuylkill League action.

Kaiden Herron had 14 points for the Olympians.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Moravian Academy-Northwestern

Northwestern built on an early advantage en route to a 49-27 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

Cara Thomas had 11 points for the Tigers (3-1), who led 15-1 after the first period and a 35-11 advantage at halftime. Paige Sevrain added nine points, and Sydney Nyce scored eight.

Gianna Tout-Puissant had 15 points for the Lions (3-2).

Emma Niebell paced Northern Lehigh (3-1) with 13 points.

Blue Mountain-Panther Valley

Blue Mountain jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 65-32 Schuylkill League win.

Lindsay Kutz scored eight of her 21 points in the first quarter to help the Eagles (3-1) build a 19-6 lead. Ava Peel added 14 points, while Abby Beam scored 12.

Sera Robin had 14 points, including four 3s, for the Panthers (1-3), with Maddison Maynard adding 10.

Nativity-Weatherly

Kami Abdo’s hot shooting powered Nativity past Weatherly for a 50-32 Schuylkill League win.

The Golden Girls (2-2) used a 15-0 spurt late in the third and early in the fourth quarters to go up 48-16.

Abdo drained five triples and scored a game-high 26 points for Nativity. Caelan Quick added 10 points.

Emma Kane poured in 19 points for the Wreckers (3-1), and Bethany Houser added 11 points.

WRESTLING

Palmerton at

Carlisle Tournament

Palmerton’s Dennis Lombardi advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 60th Carlisle Wrestling Tournament.

Lombardi received a bye in the opening round of the 152-pound bracket before posting a 12-1 major decision over Susquenita’s Isaiah Buckley. The Blue Bomber senior will face Logan Newell of Gettysburg in the quarters.

Three other Palmerton wrestlers won their first-round matches before losing in the second round. Josh Merkel at 120, Westin Horn at 132, and Caleb Gaffney at 145 all posted falls before dropping their next bouts.

SWIMMING

Moravian Academy-Tamaqua

Tamaqua split its swim meet with Moravian Academy as the girls registered a 96-83 victory and the boys suffered a 90-71 defeat.

The Blue Raider girls received individual firsts from five different swimmers to help earn the win. Posting those wins were Isabella Jones (200 free), Lexi Buchala (200 IM), Rylee Wenzel (50 free), Gabby Blasko (500 free) and Lily McNutt (100 breast). Jones and Buchala also added a second-place finish.

In the boys meet, Jathan Krall gave Tamaqua a first in the 500 free and a second in the 200 free, but the Lions earned first in nine of the 11 events. The Raiders’ other win came in the 200 free relay.
