Mullen Brey inducted in PA Hall of Fame

Weissport native Betty Mullen Brey was inducted into the most recent Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame class.

Brey was part of the 12-person 2021 class that was inducted on Oct. 30 during a banquet and ceremony held in Pittsburgh.

Brey, who passed away in 2015, was represented in Pittsburgh by her son, current Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey.

She was nominated for statewide induction by the Carbon County Hall of Fame.

Brey was a long time Carbon County Hall of Fame member, having been inducted in 1993 as part of the group’s 3rd Annual Class.

Brey was a world class swimmer who began her career in 1947 as a junior at Lehighton High School.

She was selected to represent the United States at the 1951 Pan American Games where she won four medals - two gold, one silver and one bronze. Brey made the USA Pan American Games team again in 1955, winning gold and silver medals. Brey was also part of the USA Olympic team in 1956, and won a silver medal as part of the 400-meter freestyle relay team in Melbourne, Australia.

The Carbon County Hall of Fame is one of 31 chapters throughout the state that can nominate their members for statewide induction. Brey became the eighth Carbon County Hall of Fame member to make the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, joining previous inductees Jim Thorpe, Mike Holovak, Elmer Valo, Bill Mlkvy, Bob Mlkvy, Steve Honzo and Charlie Gangaware.

Representing the Carbon County Hall of Fame for Brey’s induction were chapter President Dan McGinley, and chapter committee member Jake Boyer. McGinley was recently appointed as a Vice-President of the Northeast Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame. Carbon County is one of seven chapters in the Northeast District.

Former Palmerton basketball star Nicole Levandusky, who had an outstanding collegiate career at Xavier University and went on to play in the WNBA, has already been nominated by the Carbon County Hall of Fame for next year’s Pennsylvania Hall of Fame class. Levandusky was inducted into the Carbon County Hall of Fame in 2015.
