Chairwoman Drake oversees last Ross Twp. supervisors meeting

Chairwoman Tina Drake oversaw her last monthly Ross Township supervisors meeting on Monday evening.

After serving three six-year terms, she did not seek re-election in November.

“I had a great time serving here. I made friends. I love this township,” Drake said.

David Shay, currently the vice chairman, is one of those friends. He was the one who knocked on her door more than 18 years ago and encouraged her to run.

“Supervisors may not always agree on issues, but we have the township residents’ best interest in mind,” he said. “You are going to be missed. This is a thankless job. We do it because we love the community.”

When Rockne Newell killed three people on Aug. 5, 2013, during a monthly meeting, she thought about finishing her remaining two years and then stepping down.

But she decided to run once more and serve six more years.

After 18 years and more than 200 meetings, she says it is time for a fresh face on the board and new ideas from that person.

Her colleagues presented her with a certificate and plaque of appreciation for all her years of service.

“And now, I want to give a hug to my successor,” Drake said, as she got up from the table and went to the front row of chairs.

She embraced Randy Detrick, who ran unopposed, and wished him good luck as he begins his term in January.

For several months, Detrick, who owns Blue Ridge Winery, has been sitting in the front row operating a phone camera that records the monthly meeting and livestreams it to the township Facebook page.

He said he’ll continue to have his camera set up for the meetings. It has a 360-degree lens so it can capture the entire front of the meeting room.

Supervisor James Zahoroiko was the one who advocated the need for a social media page earlier this year. He and Detrick worked together to get it set up and create content, such as videos from monthly meetings and photos from township events.

“I have lots of ideas. I could talk for hours,” said Detrick on Monday as he put away his camera equipment. “I’m very excited to serve as supervisor.”
