December 1, 1990 - Marian advances to the Class 1A state championship football game by posting a convincing 34-14 victory over Canton. The Colts dominate play in the opening quarter, outgaining their opponent by a 173-10 margin to build a 21-0 lead. Joe Gillespie intercepts a pass on Canton’s first possession, and soon after Mike Makovec races into the end zone from 16 yards out. Gillespie, who finishes with 105 yards rushing on 16 carries, extends the margin with a 2-yard TD run, and Makovec connects with Mike Hosak on a 25-yard scoring strike to end the first frame. The winners, coached by Stan Dick (Dakosty), add two more scores, both on runs by Brian Rafferty.
