Tamaqua teen hospitalized following after-school fight

An unidentified teenager was hospitalized following a fight near Tamaqua Area High School Tuesday afternoon.

Tamaqua Borough Police were called to Coal Street around 4:30 p.m. Thursday for a reported fight. When they arrived, the participants had left the area.

Police reviewed camera footage and identified the participants, who were both juveniles, with help from Tamaqua Area School District police.

Police later learned that one of the people involved in the fight, a 17-year-old male, was transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Tamaqua Borough Police Chief Michael Hobbs said an investigation into the incident is ongoing. He did not know the teenager’s condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Larry Wittig, Tamaqua Area’s school board president, said the area where the fight occurred falls under the jurisdiction of the borough police, not the district’s own officers.

The district is awaiting the results of the borough police investigation before making its own decision on student discipline.

“Our authority to do discipline on out-of-school incidents is limited, but we’re going to push it as far as we can,” Wittig said.
