Civic Theatre to host ‘A Christmas Carol’

Civic Theatre of Allentown kicks off the 2021 holiday season with the beloved Lehigh Valley tradition, “A Christmas Carol.”

This classic Charles Dickens treasure, adapted by Sharon Lee Glassman and William Sanders, will be presented Dec. 3-18. Performances will take place at the 19th Street Theatre, 527 N. 19th St., Allentown.

Single tickets, subscriptions, and group sales are available and can be purchased online at www.civictheatre.com or by calling the Civic Theatre Box Office at 610-433-8903.

This time-honored Lehigh Valley tradition returns for its 30th Anniversary. The production originally debuted in 1989; however, it didn’t become a tradition until Dec. 7, 1991, and, since then, has allowed thousands of children and adults to share in the magic with their “fellow passengers” on the road of humanity as they travel through the past, present, and future of Scrooge’s Victorian London in this magical tale of the true spirit of Christmas.

“When we decided to make our 1989 production an annual tradition in 1991, following the lead of countless regional theaters, little did we know that Scrooge and his merry band of characters, our urchins and party kids, would delight tens of thousands of Lehigh Valley families and involve and touch countless families both onstage and behind the scenes, said Artistic Director William Sanders. “Many young people have grown up with, and/or onstage with, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and this production celebrates all of them every year. This year, every leading role is played by someone new … every year the circle gets wider.”

In addition to “A Christmas Carol,” the venue will also host “Who’s Holiday,” Dec. 10-19.

After a brief run last season, cut short by the pandemic, this wildly funny and heartfelt adults-only comedy returns for another season.

“Who’s Holiday” tells the story of Cindy Lou Who as she recalls that Christmas Eve she first met the Grinch and the twisted turn of events her life has now taken.

The theater recommends “Who’s Holiday for those 14 years of age and older due to mature language and themes.
