Mahoning raceway hearing Thursday

The future of the Mahoning Valley Speedway could be decided at a zoning hearing Thursday night.

The hearing, scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning Valley Ambulance Building, 902 Mill Road, is in regard to an application by Calogero Carlino, who seeks a ruling on the enforcement notice of township zoning officer Carl E. Faust issued on June 8, 2021.

Mahoning Valley Speedway, which opened its gates as a dirt track for the first time in mid-1950s at 2522 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive E. Lehighton, is in a C-1 zoning designation.

Faust cited the speedway, charging the following violations:

• Construction of a racetrack for radio-controlled cars or trucks without applying/receiving permit. The racetrack is not a permitted use in the C-1 Zoning District.

• A portion of the building is being used for an apartment. An apartment is not a permitted use in the C-1 Zoning District.

• The Lehigh Valley Car Meets & Car Shows is advertising a Car Meet & Voceteo & Chipeo located on the property. The function is not permitted under the variances obtained for the property.

Carlino requests a use variance in regard to the violations.

The Mahoning Valley Speedway posted word of the meeting on its Facebook page to encourage racetrack supporters to attend the hearing.

“We need our fans and those who support us to fill the seats in support of the track,” the post said, urging people to arrive by 6 p.m. for the meeting.

“The outcome could affect the future of the speedway,” the post said. “The speedway cannot survive without holding events besides racing throughout the year. This includes the RC track, car events, practices, etc. Let’s band together and show them that we are not going away! We are here to stay!”
