Schuylkill Historical Society events

Ukrainian Christmas

The Schuylkill County Historical Society will present a program on Ukrainian Christmas traditions at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Folk artist Georgine Postupak-Borchick and Kim Fritzges, an expert on Ukrainian and Russian culture, will discuss the country’s holiday food, decorations and icons.

Tree decorating contest

The Schuylkill County Historical Society is holding its annual tree-decorating contest from Nov. 17 through Jan. 8. Local historical societies and other organizations are entering their trees, which will be on display at the Society’s building at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Members of the public can vote as many times as they want for their favorite tree. Each vote will cost $1, and each group will receive all proceeds from the votes for its tree.

Boilo class

Amy Dougherty, who operates a boilo business, will lead a class on how to make this popular regional beverage from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 1, at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Participants must bring a one-pint Mason jar and ½ cup to one cup of their preferred alcohol. The evening will end with boilo sampling.

Colonial Christmas

The Schuylkill County Historical Society will present “A Colonial Christmas - A Winter with Washington’s Army” at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Historian Mike Jesberger of Lansdale will detail the movements of the Continental Army in Pennsylvania during the winter of 1776 and describe colonial Christmas customs.
