Schuylkill Sheriff’s Office employee loses cancer battle

An employee of the Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office has lost his battle with cancer.

Keith Berezwick, 40, of New Ringgold, died Thursday, Sheriff Joseph Groody said Friday.

“It was a great, courageous battle he fought,” he said, adding Berezwick didn’t complain once.

He visited him at his home last Wednesday. Groody said Berezwick, who was a criminal sergeant and transportation coordinator, was diagnosed in May with colon cancer.

He was receiving treatment.

Groody said Berezwick was with the office for at least 16 years.

His death is a “great loss” to the department, he said.

“He’s going to be a hard one to replace,” Groody said.

Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Tobin agreed his death leaves a void.

“He would give his shirt off his back to help somebody,” Tobin said.

“Team player” and “very caring” were also words he used to Berezwick, who was last at the office three months ago.

Schuylkill County District Attorney Michael O’Pake is also mourning the loss.

He described Berezwick as “a very personable, extremely competent fun loving guy who was very devoted to his wife and his family and is someone that we have lost much too soon. My heart and my thoughts and my prayers go out to his wife, Elizabeth, and to his family,” O’Pake said.
