The Carbon County Commissioners and Elections Director Kenneth J. Leffler made a surprise appearance at the polls in Parryville on Tuesday, bearing a cake, flowers and a framed resolution honoring Irene Hand for her 60 years of service working the polls.

Commissioners William J. O’Gurek, chairman, Charles Getz and Wayne Nothstein thanked Hand for what O’Gurek said was a “wonderful testament of dedication.”

The commissioners said Leffler made them aware it was Hand’s last time working the polls. Leffler said the commissioners wanted to show their appreciation for that type of service and wanted to do something special for Hand. The cost of the celebration was at their own expense, he said.
