Weatherly vacates school board member Grega’s seat

The Weatherly Area School Board voted this week to vacate Gerry Grega’s seat on the board, due to his not attending meetings.

Grega had attended meetings via Zoom when they were offered. He wanted the Zoom meetings to continue, but the board went in-person only. Grega also phoned in on occasion, with the telephone connection/reception causing board members and Grega not to hear each other well.

Grega has said that he cannot attend in person due to an illness.

The Pennsylvania School Code has a section about directors who do not attend meetings, which permits a seat to be vacated.

This section was cited, as well as language within the WASB’s own operating rules about missing two or more regular meetings, as the board voted 6-1 on this action.

Board member Tom Connors Jr. was the lone opposing vote.

Connors attended this meeting by telephone.

In favor were board President Girard Fewins, vice president, April Walters, Matt vonFrisch, William Knepper, Nancy Mulvaney and Chad Obert. Brian O’Donnell was absent.

The board now has 30 days to fill the seat.

Grega, a longtime board member, was not available for comment.

School district psychologist Dara Moucheron submitted her resignation, effective Dec. 23.

A new custodian was hired. Mark Behr will start on Nov. 11 pending all necessary clearances.

Austin Matos was also hired as a full-time cleaning staff employee, also to start on Nov. 11, pending all clearances.

The Future Business Leaders of America Weatherly Area chapter sent Rhianne Markovchick to the State Leadership Conference this past weekend, accompanied by adviser Kayla Field.

The meeting closed with an executive session, in part to discuss the still unfinished paving project.
