Palmerton man admits throwing sledgehammer into vehicle

A Carbon County man admitted throwing a sledgehammer into a vehicle.

He entered a guilty plea before Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika.

John Thomas Reppert, 32, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of propel missile into an occupied vehicle, a misdemeanor 2. In exchange for the plea the district attorney’s office dropped a felony two count of aggravated assault.

Reppert, who is an inmate in the county prison serving a 90 days sentence for DUI, was arrested by Palmerton police on Feb. 17. The police report indicated Reppert also struck the side of a vehicle with the sledgehammer which was occupied by a female.

Reppert claimed he saw the female back her vehicle into another one parked at his garage and attempt to leave. He said he “lost it” and used the sledgehammer to stop her.

Matika placed him on probation for 18 months and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, render 75 hours of community service when paroled, supply a DNA sample and have no contact with the victim.
