Lehighton grad Phelan key member of American U. field hockey team

The No. 19 American University field hockey team secured its 12th Patriot League regular season title and the top seed in the PL Tournament this past Saturday with a 3-1 road win over Boston University.

The Eagles (10-3, 5-0 PL) picked up an early corner, but the back-to-back shots from Noor Coenen and senior Hannah Moser were both blocked by the Terriers defense. BU (3-13, 1-4 PL) was called with the foul after the second shot, though, putting Lehighton graduate and former Times News Field Hockey Player of the Year Maura Phelan on the line for the penalty stroke.

For the second time in her career, the senior capitalized with a well-placed ball into the upper left corner of the cage, giving AU a 1-0 advantage.

This was Phelan’s third career goal - and second of the season - after she sent one in during the Eagles’ 6-0 rout against Holy Cross last weekend.

American will be back on the road next weekend with an 11 a.m. start at Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Eagles will return home to host the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Postseason play will start on Thursday, Nov. 4, with the semifinal rounds followed by the Championship on Saturday, Nov. 6.
