Poconos police pursuit, standoff ends with woman dead, man in custody

A female who opened fire on police is dead following a pursuit and multiple-hour standoff in Pocono Township.

Troopers returned fire, striking the female, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

Just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers with the state police barracks in Stroudsburg were requested by Pocono Township Police to assist on a vehicle pursuit along Route 611.

According to police, the vehicle being pursued became disabled in the northbound lane of Route 611, just north of Shinehill Road, and the two occupants, one male and one female, refused to exit the vehicle or comply with officers’ commands.

Police determined the occupants had a firearm in the vehicle, established a perimeter and called for assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team.

SERT members established contact with the occupants and the male exited the vehicle, but first handed the firearm to the female. According to police, the female pointed the firearm at officers and discharged it, before troopers returned fire.

The male is in police custody.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s office and the Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
