Franklin furnace malfunctions; no injuries

No one was injured after a furnace malfunction caused heavy smoke conditions at a Franklin Township home Monday afternoon.

Township fire department Captain Eric Lilly said firefighters were dispatched at 3:36 p.m. to a single home at 129 Long Run Road.

Lilly said that upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke conditions in the basement, and light smoke conditions on the first and second floor.

“We found a furnace malfunction,” Lilly said. “They have a wood-burning furnace in the basement, and a malfunction damper closed up and prevented it from going out the chimney and it backed all into the house.”

Lilly said the residents were home at the time, but called 911 and were able to evacuate the wood construction two-story home and were outside the residence upon firefighters arrival.

He said there were no injuries.

Lilly said the home had pretty much no damage.

“We ventilated the home, and allowed the occupants to return back into the residence immediately after us leaving the scene,” he said. “The guy started the furnace up and there was a malfunction.”

Lilly said firefighters were on scene for less than an hour.

“It was just the smoke that was pushed back into the house because of the damper,” he said. “We spent a half-hour to 40 minutes using positive pressure ventilation to clear the smoke conditions from the house in order to allow the residents to return.”

Lilly cautioned homeowners to pay special attention to their homes this time of year.

“This is the time of year where everybody is starting up their furnaces or wood stoves for the first time; they should properly inspect and maintain them,” he said. “Since it’s Fire Prevention Week, they should also have working smoke detectors and working carbon monoxide detectors throughout their home.”

Lilly said the Lehighton Fire Department, and Lehighton EMS also responded to the scene.
