Kelayres man gets probation for booby trap

A Kelayres man pleaded guilty Wednesday to possessing an instrument of crime and was sentenced to two years probation.

Ronald Riffon, 53, entered the plea in Schuylkill County Court in front of Common Pleas Judge Jacqueline Russell. Along with probation, he was ordered to pay cost of prosecution, and other associated amounts. He is receiving mental health treatment at the Annville State Hospital, something Russell said he should continue. He was also ordered to complete any outpatient treatment as needed.

Prosecutors withdrew the charge of recklessly endangering another person.

State Police say he set the booby trap that included a pickax and a knife above an entranceway at a home in Kline Township. Police responded to the 200 block of North Street in Kelayres Feb. 2 to serve an involuntary commitment warrant.

Police say the home was not fit for occupancy, because it had no heat, running water or electricity. He was found asleep on a bed behind a plastic curtain.

Police noticed the booby trap “ominously” mounted with a “string type mechanism.”
