Man jumps into river to avoid police

Tamaqua police have charged Jason Christopher Wiersma, 43, of Pine Street, Tamaqua, with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness for an incident on Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Officers were dispatched to Boyer’s Food Market parking lot off Cedar Street for a man arguing with two people outside the store and causing a disturbance inside the market.

When police arrived, they saw a group of people on the east side of the market, near the Little Schuylkill River.

As the officer pulled in, Wiersma saw him and jumped into the river and crossed it to the east side. Officers searched the area and eventually found Wiersma at East Broad and Pine streets.

Police spoke to an employee of the market who said Wiersma was riding a motorized cart around the store harassing customers.

At the station while speaking with Wiersma, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol. The defendant admitted to a drinking problem. He was cited and released.
