Area crashes

State police report on area crashes:

• State police at the Pocono barracks reported investigating a one-vehicle crash at 2:06 p.m. on Sept. 23 along the turnpike in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

Troopers said Ethan R. Mordaunt, 20, of Albrightsville, was driving a 2001 Toyota Avalon southbound when he lost control due to wet road conditions. The vehicle began to swerve back and forth, spun around and hit a guide rail where it came to rest.

Mordaunt was not injured.

• Joseph E. Palma, 54, of White Haven, was cited by state police at Stroudsburg with following too closely after a two-vehicle crash at 3:24 p.m. Sept. 27 on Interstate 80 in Tunkhannock Township.

Police said he was driving a 2018 Dodge Ram that was involved in a crash with a 2021 Freightliner operated by Eliecel Guzman Carballo, 48, of Homestead, Florida.

Neither driver was injured.

State police at Hazleton

• State police at Hazleton reported a one-vehicle crash at 9:43 a.m. on Sept. 25 along Spring Mountain Road in Banks Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Catherine A. Maleski, 25, of Weatherly, was driving a 2001 Ford Focus westbound when the vehicle left the road and struck an embankment, then a guide rail. The Focus came to rest in the opposing lane of travel against guide rail.

Maleski had a minor injury that did not require immediate medical attention. The vehicle was towed.

She was cited for the crash.

• A two-vehicle crash was reported at 6:50 a.m. on Sept. 23 at the exit ramp of Interstate 81 in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County. Police said Alejandra Otero Florido, 39, of Oneida, Schuylkill County, driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza, and Lauren E. Panisak, 29, of McAdoo, driving a 2014 Hyundai Sonata, were exiting the interstate when Panisak began to slow down. Otero Florido was following too closely and too fast for conditions. His vehicle hit the rear of Panisak’s vehicle.

No one was injured. The Subaru had to be towed.

Otero Florido was cited for following too closely and driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed.

• A Carbon County driver was involved in a crash involving a tractor-trailer rig.

The crash occurred at 1:36 p.m. Sept. 23 along Interstate 80 in Butler Township. Troopers said Mujahid A. Ibrahim, 42, of Brooklyn Park, Michigan, was driving a 2008 Volvo tractor with trailer westbound in the right lane. He failed to maintain control of his rig and entered the left lane of travel, striking a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu operated by Vanessa E. Zellers, 36, of Lehighton. The two vehicles hit the center median where the rig rolled over and came to rest in the eastbound lane. The Malibu came to final rest off the road.

Ibrahim sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment. Zellers was not injured.

Troopers said Ibrahim was cited for multiple motor vehicle code violations.

Turnpike

Jabin R. Brazil, 47, of Danielsville, was cited by state police at the King of Prussia barracks with failure to drive at a safe speed following a mishap at 2:27 p.m. Sept. 1 on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Police said the incident happened at mile post 49.5 in Upper Milford Township when Brazil was driving a 2018 Ram 2500 truck southbound that struck the rear of a 2020 Volkswagen operated by Derrick D. Leavigne, 24, of Montgomery, Alabama. The latter was southbound as well and was traveling slower than the posted speed limit while traveling up a hill.

Neither driver was injured, police said.
