Family Promise getting new home in Carbon

Family Promise in Carbon County is getting a new home.

It’s moving to the former rectory of St. Francis of Assisi Church at 140 W. Mill St., Nesquehoning.

On Thursday, volunteers from United Way and Carbon Corps assisted Family Promise in getting the building ready for its opening.

The volunteer project was through the United Way’s Day of Caring.

The workers cleaned and painted the kitchen and two offices in the brick structure.

The move to the new location, from the present site on Catawissa Street, is scheduled to occur this weekend.

Jaimie Phelps, case manager for Family Promise, said the organization will also be utilizing the church building next to the former rectory, possibly next spring.

The church originally was constructed in 1920 as Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. It became the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in 2008 when three Catholic parishes in Nesquehoning merged.

The Catholic diocese has since closed St. Francis of Assisi.
