Jim Thorpe man dies of injuries suffered in motorcycle crash

A Jim Thorpe man has died from injuries suffered during a three-car crash last month in Mahoning Township.

Township police Chief Audie Mertz said the incident occurred at 12:25 p.m. Aug. 9 along Route 209 at the intersection of Packerton Dam Drive.

Mertz said a motorcycle was heading toward Jim Thorpe, leaving a construction zone when it failed to merge back into its own lane of travel and hit another car that was stopped.

The driver of the motorcycle, James Kattner, 81, was pronounced dead Wednesday by the Lehigh County Coroner at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem.

Kattner died as a result of complications from the crash.

Mertz said the crash involved three vehicles and nine people.

He said there were five injuries, including the death.

Mertz said the crash was work-zone related.

He said the passenger on the motorcycle was taken by ambulance. Kattner was flown by helicopter from the crash scene.

Mertz said the vehicle the motorcycle hit had three occupants, who were all taken by ambulance.

He said that vehicle was pushed into another vehicle, but no one in that vehicle was injured.
