The truck driver involved in a fatal crash with a motorcyclist in Schuylkill County last week will be charged with a motor vehicle code violation, according to state police at Schuylkill Haven.

The crash occurred at 5:19 p.m. on Sept. 23 along Route 901 at the intersection with Interstate 81 access ramp in Foster Township.

The cyclist killed was identified as Gregory M. Calkins, 20, of Pottsville. He was driving a 2021 KTM 390 Duke bike. The truck driver was identified as William D. Thomas II, 51, of Bowie, Maryland, driving a 2020 Volvo truck tractor with trailer.

Troopers said Thomas was northbound and Calkins southbound. Troopers said Thomas did not see Calkins and steered across the southbound lane to negotiate a left turn onto the southbound access ramp to I-81. Calkins was unable to slow down before hitting the truck.

Calkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Thomas was not injured.

Troopers indicate in the accident report that Thomas will be charged with careless driving.
