Weissport looks to refinance loans, purchase grinder pumps
Weissport Borough Council made a motion at Monday’s meeting to move forward with plans to refinance several loans and get enough money to purchase the rest of the grinder pumps needed for the town. About half of the pumps in town had been replaced thanks to a grant received last year, now they plan to replace the rest before they break down.
The Borough’s Municipal Authority is responsible for the sewer system in town, including the pumps located at the homes in the borough.
There are three loans outstanding at present. One loan is at 1% and will be finished next year.
The borough is looking to finance $280,000 to pay off the two higher-interest loans; one at 4.5% that does not expire until 2043, and another at 4.5% that would not be paid off until 2029. The new loan would be at 1.9% for 10 years. So rather than paying $6,327 per month for the current loans, the borough would be $4,125 per month for the refinanced loans and that would include the extra funds to purchase the remaining grinder pumps.
The Municipal Authority signs for the loan; the borough would be a co-signer of the new loan. The authority will use the sewage fees they collect to pay the loan.
Another project in the works is to create backup system for the wet wells for the sewer system in the borough. At present, sewage is pumped from Franklin Township, comes into Weissport, then gets passed on to the sewage treatment plant. It is estimated that the borough currently processes about 2 million gallons of sewage per month.
Once the new St. Luke’s Carbon Campus is up and running, that amount will increase. The sewer system at present has the capacity and recently was renovated, but the borough needs to make sure they have a backup system ready in case the main system were to go down for any reason.
