Tigers dominate short-handed Saucon

The Saucon Valley girls’ soccer team is admittedly beat up physically, with four starters out due to various injuries.

Even with the injuries, Northwestern Lehigh’s 8-0 win over the Panthers on Tuesday night was an impressive performance by the Tigers.

Six different players scored for Northwestern Lehigh in the win, and the defense kept the Panthers stymied and only allowed one shot on goal in the win.

“They’re hurting a little bit, but they’ve been giving a lot of teams fits, and I told the girls that we needed to be ready to go,” said Northwestern coach Jordan Smith. “We had Notre Dame yesterday, Saucon today and then Palisades tomorrow, so that’s a big three-game stint for us. We showed up yesterday and got five goals from five different players, and got eight goals from six different players tonight.

“Early in the season, we weren’t getting that kind of production, so we’re finally putting it together and getting the results.”

It took a while for Northwestern Lehigh (5-0-1 Colonial, 7-1-1 overall) to get on the board, but once it did, the Tigers scored in bunches.

Midway through the first half, Panthers’ goalkeeper Sarah Deibert tipped a shot from a Northwestern Lehigh player over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. The Lady Tigers had put a relentless amount of pressure on Deibert, and less than a minute after the near miss, Camryn Fitch made a nice play off a corner kick to put Northwestern Lehigh up 1-0.

“The kick came in tight to the goal and Katie [Browning] hit it backward toward me, and I just volleyed it in with my left foot,” said Fitch, who is a right-footed kicker, but switched things up to get her team on the board.

From that goal, it took just over three minutes for the Tigers to net two more scores.

Browning raced toward the goal on a breakaway and fired a shot past Deibert to go up 2-0. Then, Fitch returned with the team’s third goal to give it a 3-0 lead that stood going into halftime.

The scoring started much quicker in the second half, when Kathryn Edgar scored with 34:41 left in regulation. This time, it would take exactly five minutes for the Tigers to put three goals in the net.

The first came when a shot from the outside went off the crossbar and flew nearly straight up. When it came down, Browning was waiting for it, and scored her second goal of the night.

Next up was senior Olivia Motolese, whose goal with 29:40 left to play put the game into the mercy rule.

“I think this was the best that we’ve played this season. We really jelled today and had a big night,” said Browning.

With the clock running constantly after Motolese’s goal, Northwestern was still able to score two more times against Saucon Valley (4-1-0, 4-3-0). Mia DeLillo scored with 16:10 left to play, and Sarah Yeakel capped the scoring shortly after DeLillo’s goal.

Sophia Motolese had two assists in the win, and Sammy Bardonner, Browning, Quinn Conrey, Jakayla Holmes and Abby Pomajevich also chipped in with assists.

SENIOR FESTIVITIES

... The Northwestern Lehigh roster has 15 seniors. Five of the seniors - Browning, DeLillo, Edgar, Motolese and Yeakel - made the most of their big night by scoring goals, while Pomajevich added an assist. The seniors were introduced along with their parents before the game.

LONELY GIRL

... Goalie Naomi Glassberg spent much of the night as a spectator. Saucon Valley managed just two shots in the game, with only one of them requiring Glassberg to make a save. Glassberg and the Tigers defense have allowed just two goals this season, and had a streak of five straight shutouts before a loss to Central Columbia on Saturday.
