Local roundup: Results from Sept. 15

With the postseason on the horizon, the Palmerton golf team posted another impressive victory on Wednesday.

The Bombers also posted a win in field hockey action, as did Northwestern, while Jim Thorpe tennis and Tamaqua volleyball also recorded victories.

GOLF

Palmerton-Northwestern

Palmerton capped the regular season at 13-1 overall thanks to a 381-455 Colonial League win over Northwestern.

Tyler Hager just edged Bomber teammate Josh Suto for medalist honors, as Hager carded a 70 while Suto followed with a 71.

Connor Reinhard (78) and Dominic Kintz (79) also posted solid rounds for the Bombers.

Stone Sosnovik paced the Tigers (3-10; 3-10 CL) with a team low score of 88.

Jeff Markosky earned medalist honors with a 76 for the Spartans.

The Blue Raiders (3-8 overall; 4-6 SL) were led by Peter McGinley’s 82.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pleasant Vy.-Liberty

Liberty scored on a set piece in the opening minutes of the second half on a deflection and made it stand in a 1-0 win over Pleasant Valley in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Lindsey Heffernan scored for the Hurricanes, while Ariana Reid was credited with the assist.

The contest was called for lightning with about 25 minutes left to play in the game.

Sam Merklin made 11 saves, including a fantastic breakaway save, for the Bears.

The Tamaqua boys posted a 2-1 mark in a Schuylkill League meet at Jim Thorpe.

The Raiders topped North Schuylkill (20-42), and edged Jim Thorpe after the teams finished tied at 29-29 based on the finish of their sixth runner.

Ridge Snyder and Ryan Bailor finished second and third for the Olympians, respectively. Levi Kunkel led Tamaqua with a sixth-place finish.

The Jim Thorpe girls posted a victory over Tamaqua, 20-39.

Katelynn Bos had the best finish for the Olympians in sixth, while Grace Stegermerten was just ahead in fifth.

The Lehighton boys and girls went 1-2 in Schuylkill League action against Minersville, Pine Grove and Pottsville.

The Indians posted a 24-35 win over the Cardinals in the boys’ meet, and a 19-42 win on the girls’ side.

Katie Wojton led Lehighton with a fourth-place finish, while Gianna Sube notched a top-10 finish in seventh place.

Brandon Hall and Bradley Yenser crossed the finish line in seventh and eighth, respectively, to lead the Indians on the boys’ side.

Northern Lehigh-Palmerton

Four different players scored as Palmerton rolled to a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Sydney Frantz sparked the Bombers (4-2, 4-1) with a goal and an assist, while Kelsey Balliet, Erin Kistler and Ana Recker also added scores.

Shannon Dougherty posted three saves to secure the shutout, while Kendall Heiney recorded 16 saves for the Bulldogs (2-3, 2-3).

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Cara Thomas’s two goals led Northwestern in a 6-0 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Brinley Rex added a goal and an assist for the Tigers (3-2, 3-2), while Brynn Balliet, Sarah Schultz and Brooke Page also scored.

Carsyn Van Norman chipped in with an assist.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe blanked Tamaqua for a 5-0 win.

The Olympians’ trio of Gabby Nunez, Tara McLean and Hailey Trine swept singles’ play against the visiting Blue Raiders.

Jim Thorpe moves to 7-2 overall, while Tamaqua slips to 1-6 on the season.

Tamaqua scored its first win of the season with a 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 nonleague win over Palmerton.

Madison Baddick led the Blue Raiders with 12 digs, 11 aces, and one kill, while Amanda Wunderlich finished with 12 digs and one ace.

Eileen Lusch (six digs, four aces, two kills) and Ashlyn Houser (eight digs) also contributed in the Tamaqua (1-4 overall) victory.

The Blue Bombers (0-9 overall) battled, but faded after winning the first set.

Northampton-Pleasant Valley

Northampton came out on top with a 26-24, 25-20, 25-17 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Jackie James paced the Bears with eight digs, six service points, five kills and two assists, while Lexi Womack chipped in with 12 service points, three aces, three kills, two digs and one block.

Hannah Akob (10 digs, six service points, four kills) and Brianna Bruckman (11 assists, three digs) contributed to the PV (1-3 overall; 1-2 EPC) effort.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove

A Schuylkill League contest between Jim Thorpe and Pine Grove was cut short due to weather and ended in a 0-0 tie.

Due to storms that hit the area early in the evening, it forced officials to call the game between the Olympians and the Cardinal -, who are both unbeaten in the Schuylkill League - with 29 minutes left in the second half.

Olympians’ keeper Jacob Geiser finished with one save.

Jim Thorpe moves to 4-1-2 overall (2-0-2 SL), while Pine Grove goes to 5-0-1 (3-0-1 SL).

Palmerton-Moravian Academy

Moravian Academy cruised to a 7-2 Colonial League win over visiting Palmerton.

Dillon Lombardi and Trevor Anthony accounted for the Blue Bombers’ (1-5, 0-5) two goals.
