Local events focus on suicide prevention

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in Pennsylvania and the 10th leading cause of death across the country. In 2019, 47,511 people were lost nationally to suicide. Everyone can play a part in saving a life. We want to let individuals know that death is not the only option and support is available.

Carbon Monroe Pike System of Care will host free showings of the movie “My Ascension” in each county followed by a panel discussion with professionals and community partners. In addition, we have partnered with Youth Era to offer a fun night out for anyone looking to create new ways to release or reduce stress and find calm at our Make and Take Care Nights.

“My Ascension” is a documentary film raising awareness of mental health and suicide while spreading a message of hope and healing to all.

A suicide attempt left 16-year-old varsity cheerleader, Emma Benoit, paralyzed, but propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience to help others find hope, and shine more light on the fact that 20 young people die every day by suicide in the United States.

See it Sept. 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Lehighton Recreation Center, 243 S. Eighth St., Lehighton.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion about preventing suicides in our community. Panelists will include professionals and community partners.

Registration is required for this free event at https://forms.gle/E54hDv4qN6mamUJMA.
