Mahoning Valley 8 reopens after temporary closure

A movie theater in Mahoning Township planned to reopen today after being temporarily closed due to technical difficulties.

Mahoning Valley 8 - formerly Mahoning Valley Cinema - at the Carbon Plaza Mall posted on its Facebook page Wednesday night that it is reopening today.

“This will be our schedule for that date (Thursday) only,” the theater posted. “Check our other posts for the schedule that starts Friday.”

That comes after the cinema on Aug. 27 posted the following on its Facebook page.

“We are temporarily closed due to a small fire incident with one of our HVAC units caused by the (Aug. 26) storm. We will resume normal business as soon as it is deemed safe by the appropriate authorities. Thank you for your understanding.”

Contacted Wednesday afternoon, Mahoning Valley Fire Chief Mark Ebbert said firefighters responded to the cinema the evening of Aug. 26 for reported smoke in one movie theater.

“It was light smoke conditions,” Ebbert said. “We were able to determine it was coming from the rooftop HVAC unit for theater No. 7.”

Ebbert said there were several patrons inside at the time of the incident, but that no one was injured.

“There were a few patrons who were in the movie theater itself,” he said. “The staff there had calmly and efficiently evacuated everyone.”

Ebbert said that while the cause was determined within about 10 minutes, firefighters remained on scene for over an hour.

FunTime Cinemas Inc. opened Mahoning Valley 8 as its fourth location across the state.

The company said it reached out to the property’s landlord when they saw the theater had been closed and were able to reach an agreement that gave it a “long-term opportunity to be in the area.”

FunTime Cinemas Inc. owns and operates three other locations in central Pennsylvania including Colonial Park 4 in Harrisburg, Kendig Square Movies 6 in Willow Street, and South York Cinema in York.

The former operators of Mahoning Valley Cinema announced in April 2020 they would be closing the theater immediately. The theater had been operating at Carbon Plaza for more than 20 years.
