Carbon County commissioners
The Carbon County Commissioners discussed or acted on the following items on Thursday.
• Approved the submission of an application to the Pennsylvania Counties Risk Pool 2021-2022 Loss Prevention grant to purchase a new PA system for the lifeguard/first aide station at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The cost of the system is $1,339.85.
• Ratified a proclamation acknowledging the 100th year anniversary of Sernak Farms in Weatherly. The commissioners congratulated the farm on reaching this milestone.
Commissioner Chris Lukasevich also highlighted that the county recognized 200 years of the Fogel farm at the Carbon County Fair.
• Lukasevich spoke about questions that have risen about the operational and maintenance costs of the Jim Thorpe administration building that the county is looking to purchase. The issue came out of a statement Commissioner Rocky Ahner had made several weeks ago regarding purchasing the additional building. Lukasevich outlined several items regarding his findings of these cost analysis over the past several years and said that additional discussions could occur to provide further details for better understanding of the costs associated with the building.
Ahner responded, saying that there are a lot of costs with reconfiguring the building that is more than maintenance and operational costs. He added that there are some things that are failing within the buildings the county already owns that need to be addressed.
• Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein spoke about the 4-H livestock auction at the Carbon County Fair and how this is an amazing thing for the children who are raising the animals. He pointed out that one steer went for $10,000, which was a record, and urged anyone who hasn’t gone to a livestock auction to consider attending one at next year’s fair.
