Henri dumps several inches of rain
Henri made its way through the Northeast Sunday, bringing soaking rain and power outages to some of the area, while sparing other parts. The National Weather Service reported several inches had fallen on the region Sunday night, with more to come.
In Towamensing a resident measured 4 inches in a rain gauge. In Albrightsville 6 inches filled a gauge.
Approximately 2,000 people were without electricity as of 5:30 a.m., PPL Utilities reported.
Locally, outages were reported in Bowmanstown borough, 179; Lehigh County, 391, which includes 90 in Washington Township; Monroe, 179, with a few in Chestnuthill and 78 in Polk Township; Northampton County, 47; and 10 in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County.
Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County emergency management coordinator, said overall, Carbon County didn’t have any “major issues.”
“There have been small things that are still being dealt with,” Nalesnik said this morning. “But there was no serious or significant issues. Just some roadways closed due to trees and wires down or some water on the roadways.”
In Towamensing Township, a 40-foot tree fell onto a garage on Sunday, but no injuries were reported.
Nearby in Towamensing a resident reported 4 inches of rain in her gauge at 11 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service says 3 to 5 inches fell in the area.
Nalesnik said that officials are monitoring the Lehigh River at Lehighton, which has a flood stage of 10 feet.
He said that at the last check, the water was a little under flood stage but will be continued to be watched. A flood warning was issued for the river at Walnutport and in Lehigh County.
There were some reported road closures in Carbon, including Lower Smith Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township, Country Club Road in Mahoning Township, a portion of Route 895 in East Penn Township, and Tannery Road/South River Street and River Road in Kidder Township.
The Mahoning Creek, which is known for flooding during heavy rains, spilled over its banks at the intersection of South Ninth Street and Route 443 in Lehighton, covering the construction site for a portion of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation road widening project.
Beltzville State Park officials also announced on its Facebook page that “due to heavy rainfall, the Pine Run and Preachers Camp boat launches as well as C lot and State Police Road will be closed until further notice.”
In Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, Meadowlake Road is closed at Route 115 and Pheasant Road is closed because of storm damage between High Hill Road and Hill Run Road.
In Polk Township, flooding was reported on Silver Spring Boulevard in both directions between Mountain View Road and Route 209. Flooded areas were Fiddletown, Weir Mountain and Gilbert Road, between Old Stagecoach Road and Route 209 and on Mill Pond Road and Fairground Road at Route 209. All lanes are closed.
In Stroudsburg, some residents were moved from apartments off Dreher Avenue to safer areas following massive flooding that left vehicles and some apartments submerged. A shelter was set up at Koehler Fieldhouse at East Stroudsburg University.
