Brewery produces Gimme a Zimmie hard iced tea

It’s sweet with a hint of lemon, but “Gimme a Zimmie” hard iced tea is served on tap instead of in a carton.

Downriver Brewing Company in Stroudsburg recently created an adult version of a beverage that has been enjoyed by people in Carbon County for decades.

With the blessing of Zimmerman’s Dairy, the brewery set out to create a beverage with a familiar flavor, as well as bubbles and 6.3% alcohol by volume.

“It’s how they wanted it, and we wanted it - identical to Zimmerman’s iced tea. The aroma and flavor is all there in my eyes,” said Alex Hoffman, brewer at Downriver Brewing Company.

Hoffman’s creation created a buzz online before it was available for sale. On Tuesday, he posted a picture advertising the tea on his own social media, saying it would be available that Thursday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it was shared 285 times.

Hoffman lives in Lehighton and grew up drinking Zimmerman’s. Friends who know the Zimmerman family helped connect him.

They gave him permission to use the name, and helped match its flavor for the hard iced tea, which is based on hard seltzer.

While Downriver is a brewery, hard iced tea isn’t out of place on their menu.

They serve wine, beer cocktails and cider from a sister company, Banter’s Cider, in addition to their beer and hard seltzer.

Keeping things local is important to Hoffman when it comes to sourcing hops and grains for his beer.

So when he decided to add a hard iced tea to the menu, he wanted to do the same thing.

“Since the pandemic, no matter who comes into our brewery is supporting local. Being able to do a beer that focuses on local material, that’s great,” he said.

For now, the iced tea will only be available at Downriver, which is open Thursday-Monday and offers food and ax throwing.

It is also available to go in 32-ounce and 64-ounce growlers, as well as a 32-ounce “crowler,” a large can which can keep in a refrigerator for more than a week.

Downriver Brewing Company is located at 569 Quaker Alley in Stroudsburg.
