Police: Shenandoah man lit garbage bag on fire

A Shenandoah man has been charged with arson for an incident Monday.

Shenandoah police responded to 9 N. Bower St. for a report of a man lighting a trash bag on fire. William Murphy told police when he went outside to smoke a cigarette he saw Jeffrey Whalen, 49, light the trash bag near his house, charging documents state.

Murphy chased Whalen and called police. The bag Whalen lit had a burn hole in the bottom corner. It was directly next to another bag that was also near Murphy’s house and another structure, which at the time was occupied by Murphy and his family, police said.

Police located Whalen in the 100 block of East Centre Street.

He was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison, where he remains on $15,000 cash bail.

He was arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge James Reiley on charges of arson, possessing explosive/incendiary material, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.
