Palmerton district looks into options for future of field house

Palmerton Area School District’s facilities manager said he should have options to discuss with the school board next month on the future of a field house at Seventh Street and Delaware Avenue that was struck by a vehicle in May.

“We’ve had two different contractors on site to price different options and we’re still awaiting some information before we can discuss how to move forward,” Joe Faenza said during a board workshop last week.

The incident occurred when the driver, Francis Botek, 81, of Lehighton, was traveling east on Delaware and wanted to make a U-turn to go west. As he proceeded to do that, he said he didn’t know what happened but the gas pedal stuck, and the vehicle traveled across Delaware Avenue into the field house building, Police Chief Randy Smith said at the time.

Faenza said Botek was driving a brand-new Subaru that has since been recalled for an accelerator that sticks.

“In the early stages, they believe that is what happened,” he said.

The building, owned by the district, had severe structural damage to the wall. A representative for the district’s liability insurance carrier has processed a claim for the damage, Faenza said. A hazardous materials contractor visited the site to take samples, and tests for asbestos came back clean.

“The building is secure,” he added. “Right now, it’s only a few of the rooms in there that are used by the booster club for some football equipment.”
