Clerk of courts office hires former public defender

The former Carbon County chief public defender, who was let go earlier this year, has been rehired to serve in the clerk of courts office.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners chose to not approve the appointment of Gregory L. Mousseau of Jim Thorpe, who will serve as solicitor for the clerk of courts, effective Aug. 2. The lack of action did not affect his hiring because county row officers have the final say in if an applicant is hired for a position.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich again cited that the commissioners had fired Mousseau because “we lost confidence in his ability to operate and manage his office so it would be hypocritical and inappropriate to accept that appointment.”

Commissioner Rocky Ahner echoed Lukasevich’s thought, saying that the county needs to stand by the previous action in this matter, even though the final say is not up to them.

“It is up to the department head,” he said. “If they want that person hired, we can’t stop it.”

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein agreed, adding that he just wouldn’t vote on that appointment.

The commissioners then approved the personnel report with the exception of the solicitor position in question.

Lukasevich also abstained to a change of status position for Megan K. Croizier of Lehighton to county casework supervisor II due to being a family member.
