State police at Hazleton report on crashes

State troopers at Hazleton report on crashes:

• A crash involving a Carbon County driver that occurred at 9:02 a.m. on June 9 at the intersection of Stockton Mountain Road and Club 40 Road, in Hazle Township, Luzerne County.

Troopers said Maria Aliaga Maldonado, 22, of Hazle Township, was driving a 2017 Honda Civic eastbound on Club 40 Road while Todd A. Koehler, 45, of Nesquehoning, was northbound in a 2007 Jeep Liberty on Stockton Mountain Road.

Aliaga Maldonado failed to stop at the intersection and struck Koehler’s vehicle. The Honda then struck a legally parked 2008 Dodge Avenger. No injuries were reported.

Aliaga Malddonado was cited for a stop sign violation.

• A Monroe County driver was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash on July 4 along Interstate 80 in Foster Township, Luzerne County, and is facing charges.

State police at Hazleton said Laurel A. Smeltz, 19, of Tannersville, was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry eastbound in the left lane and approaching a right curve in the road. She lost control on a curve with her vehicle going off the left side of the road, traveled a tenth of a mile down the grass sounder and center median. The car then went down an embankment and hit a tree.

She was taken to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Plains Township, with suspected serious injuries, troopers said. Troopers said drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle. Troopers said a search warrant was obtained to secure medical records from the hospital. Drug and DUI charges are pending.
