Jim Thorpe hosts National Night Out

Jim Thorpe will join thousands of communities across the country in hosting National Night Out on Aug. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Held at Jim Thorpe Memorial Park, the event aims to promote crime and drug prevention.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Jim Thorpe Police Department and Jim Thorpe Community Watch.

“This year’s event in Jim Thorpe will feature first responders from the Jim Thorpe area, over 20 organizations and civic groups, food, drinks, prize giveaways for the kids and music provided by DJ Monroe Berger,” Police Chief Joe Schatz said. “The Jim Thorpe Police Department will also have the prescription takeback box at this event.”

The box, police said, is the best way to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription and nonprescription medicines. Before disposing of prescription medicines, be sure to remove all personal information on pill bottle labels and medicine packaging.

National Night Out, Schatz said, “is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”

Jim Thorpe Borough, Jim Thorpe Community Watch, Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank, the Mauch Chunk Trust Company, Shawn Kresge Services and DJ Monroe Berger are supporting the event.

“We would also like to thank the many organizations and civic groups for agreeing to volunteer their time to help make this event a success,” Schatz said.

The rain date for event is Aug. 4
