Diamond reunion

The Pleasant Valley Class of ’61, the first class to graduate from the then-new high school in Brodheadsville, combining Chestnuthill and Polk high schools, is holding its 60th anniversary reunion of the class’s graduation celebration in August at the Blue Mountain Ski resort.

Community dinner

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is having a free community dinner tonight. At this time it is still scheduled as a drive-thru pickup meal from 5 to 6 p.m.

Bible study

Pastor Suzanne Brooks-Cope, St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is leading an in-person summer evening Bible study focusing on women of the Bible.

It meets today at 6 p.m. Other sessions are scheduled for Aug. 11 and Aug. 15.

One can join by Zoom, and since each lesson is unique, one should not worry about missing a session.

Farewell and hello

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has celebrated the 12 years of ministry by Father Mike Quinnan and wishes him well as he is reassigned to St. Luke’s Parish in Stroudsburg.

Beginning Aug. 9, Father Robert Simon will be serving the families of Our Lady Queen of Peace RC church. He is being transferred form St. Catherine of Siena in Moscow near Scranton.

Father Mike will continue as administrator for the parish until Father Simon’s arrival.

Senior center

The Chestnuthill Senior Center, meeting at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, is again open. The menu for Friday is macaroni and cheese. For next Wednesday it is pork with apple gravy.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It is requested that for meal reservations one call two days in advance by 11 a.m. There is a suggested meal donation.

PVEN needed items

Current requests for help in serving those in need from the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network include: backpacks, school supplies, school uniforms - both new and gently used - sneakers, socks and new underwear, personal care items for the going to school crowd of about 150 youth; salad dressing, ketchup, mayo and canned vegetables for the food pantry; and personal care products, school supplies and school uniforms for the Clothing Closet.

Any donations can be dropped off at the PVEN on Route 209 in Sciota.

Effort pantry

The SFRC food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Special music

Children who attended VBS at St. Matthew’s UCC have been invited to the church’s Sunday worship service at 9 a.m. to sing a VBS song, share what they loved about VBS, and perform one of the Bible stories.

Block party

Salem-St. Paul’s Vacation Bible School children and youth studied Meet Our Neighbors on July 11. This coming Sunday the plan is to have a block party to help the youth meet their neighbors from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church’s front yard for games, snacks and conversation.

If the weather is bad, the event will be in the lobby with open doors.

Free concert

Chestnuthill Township and WEPOSC have announced a free July summer concert at Chestnuthill Park on Sunday.

StaticSix28 will be playing beginning at 4 p.m. The band plays a variety of music such as rock, alternative, rap/hip-hop and pop.

Starting at 6 p.m. will be the band Luca. They are a four-piece musical group incorporating original music, improvisation, and a mix of genre and decade-spanning cover tunes.

Featured will be Brittney Coleman on lead vocals, Kenny Hatt on guitar, Bron Williams on bass, and Bryan B-EZ on drums.

Rice around the world catering company will be providing chicken and cheese quesadillas and chicken and chorizo paella. They will be served with housemade chipotle aioli and lemon garlic aioli beginning at 4 p.m.

Families are invited to come and enjoy an evening listening to music. Advised is to bring a blanket, chair and bug spray. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed.

Ice cream will be served at intermission for free as well. Staff hopes to see many there.

Public bingo

The bingo hosted by the American Legion Post 927 is open to the public. It begins at 6:30 p.m. with card sales. Play begins at 7 p.m. The event closes at 9 p.m.

Polk supervisors

The Polk Township Supervisors meeting is on the calendar for Monday at 7 p.m.

Republicans meet

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the West End Republican Cub is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

Those opting to have dinner before the meeting should arrive at 6 p.m.

Carry-outs are available.

Saturday worship

Zion Lutheran Church has announced its 5 p.m. Saturday worship will resume Aug. 7.
