Local Roundup: Results from July 12

Palmerton and Northern Valley both won their opening-round Lehigh Valley Connie Mack playoff games on Monday.

The Bombers defeated Nazareth, while the Chargers knocked off Bangor.

Both teams will play Wednesday in the league’s quarterfinal round.

Elsewhere, Berlinsville outscored Martin’s Creek in a Blue Mountain League contest.

Palmerton-Nazareth

Palmerton wiped out an early deficit before pulling away for an 18-5 victory over Nazareth in the opening round of the league playoffs.

The Blue Bombers will now meet top-seeded and undefeated Northwest Bethlehem on Wednesday.

Trailing 3-2 after three innings, Palmerton scored five runs in the fourth and exploded for seven more in the fifth.

The first three hitters in its lineup combined to go 7-for-14 with eight runs and six RBIs. They included Kaleb Eitner (three hits - one a double - two runs, three RBIs), Daniel Lucykanish (single, triple, three runs, three RBIs), and Trey Sterling (two hits, three runs).

Ty Sander finished with four RBIs in the contest, while Nate Steinmetz contributed a double, three runs and two RBIs. Chase Reph also chipped in with a hit, RBI and two runs.

Reph and Jacob Grammes took care of the pitching duties, as the two allowed only four Nazareth hits.

Northern Valley-Bangor

Northern Valley jumped out to a five-run lead ,and then hung on to post a 5-4 victory over Bangor in the league’s opening-round playoffs.

The win lifts the Chargers into Wednesday’s quarterfinal round matchup at Franklin Township.

Northern Valley had just two hits, with both of them coming off the bat of Nate Buskirk. The Chargers took advantage of five Bangor errors in the contest, including three in the first inning that resulted in a 2-0 NV lead.

Two more miscues in the second frame, along with a hit by Buskirk and a bases-loaded walk to Erik Mather, upped the margin to 5-0.

Shaun O’Donnell went the distance on the mound for the winners, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four.

Wesley George knocked in several runs for Northern Valley, while Riley Stapp had two RBIs for Bangor.

Martin’s Creek-

Berlinsville Braves

In a wild slugfest, Berlinsvile outscored Martin’s Creek by a 16-14 score.

The two teams combined for six multi-run innings. The Braves (3-13-1) blew an early five-run lead, but tallied seven times in the third inning to erase a three-run deficit.

Tim Cavanaugh had two hits, one a double, and knocked in four runs for the winners. Owen Fischl added a double, triple and three RBIs. JD Greeley and Alec Bove both added a pair of hits and three runs scored. Greeley also knocked in two runs.

For the Creekers (9-8), Carson Freeman had three hits, including a two-run homer.

Valley Athletic-Mahanoy

Ryan Vecolitis pitched a four-hitter, and Valley Athletic used a big sixth inning to gain a 5-2 victory over Mahanoy City in a game from Sunday.

Vecolitis walked three and struck out one in his complete-game effort.

After being held scoreless for five innings, the VA bats exploded for five runs in the fifth. Tim Fritzinger, Cian McLaughlin, Gianni Valentine and Vecolitis all contributed a hit and a run scored in the frame. Nate Fannock also added a hit, with Chase Andrews chipping in with a walk and a run.

McLaughlin, Vecolitis and Gabe Coleman each finished with two hits.

Valley Athletic

In a game from last Wednesday, Valley Athletic dropped an 11-9 decision to Schuylkill Valley.

Cian McLaughlin and Chase Andrews both had big games for Valley Athletic, as each finished with three hits and two runs scored. VA also received two hits and a run from Tim Fritzinger and Nate Fannock.

Ryan Vecolitis added a pair of hits, while Jayden Kubert chipped in with a double and a run.

For the winners, Luke Kietsok finished with three hits.
