Resort bridge collapses, contractor hurt

A bridge which usually carries golf carts over the Delaware River gave way Friday morning when a contractor was crossing it driving a piece of machinery.

The contractor was rescued by people who witnessed the partial collapse, and taken to a hospital.

The incident occurred at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort - Poconos in Monroe County, state police said.

The golf course has 27 holes, 3 on the Pennsylvania side of the river and the rest on Shawnee Island.

The lineman was crossing the bridge on a piece of what state police described as ‘heavy machinery,’ when part of the bridge fell through, sending the lineman and the machinery into the river.

People who saw the incident helped to get the worker out of the water.

He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest for treatment.

A worker at the hotel said that the resort expected the golf course to be reopened Saturday. The resort also has a six-hole par 3 course.

The Department of Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety and Health Administration were notified, and Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the incident.
