Driver causes rollover on I-81; flees scene

An unknown driver caused a rollover crash along Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, on Wednesday, then fled the scene. State police at Frackville said the incident occurred at 5:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes. The other driver has serious injuries, police said.

According to troopers a 2002 Subaru Outback was being driven southbound in the left passing lane with a black in color sport utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet, was in the right lane which then moved into the left lane striking the Subaru. The Subaru veered onto the east shoulder and then back into the left lane where it was struck a second time. After the second impact the Subaru rolled over several times ejecting the driver. The hit-and-run driver stopped and approached the passenger side of the Subaru, then re-entered his vehicle and fled southbound.

The driver that was ejected suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, by a medical helicopter. Two passengers in the vehicle were also injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital East, Pottsville. The names of the injured were not released by troopers.
