West End news for July 7, 2021

Pizza order due

Homemade pizza is again being offered by McMichaels UMC. Pizzas are 12-inch, cheese only. One can add one’s own preferred toppings. Orders are due by Thursday by calling Martha Stout at 570-629-1136. Leave name, phone number, and number of pizzas wanted.

Pickup is before noon at the church on July 17.

Senior center

The Chestnuthill Senior Center, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, is open again, as are all Monroe County Senior centers. The hours and days are Wednesday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The menu for next Wednesday is chicken broccoli fettuccine Alfredo, and for the following Friday, cod Caponata.

For meal reservations, please call two days in advance by 11 a.m. There is a suggested meal donation.

New COVID policy

Effort UMC has announced the following new COVID-19 policy, which began on June 28: mask wearing will be optional except for children between the ages of 3 and 11, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still recommending those children who are unvaccinated wear a mask. If one is more comfortable wearing a mask, please do so. (No judgments are to be made); social distancing will still be encouraged; singing will resume; the rental and/use of Wesley Hall/Friendship etc., will resume for church and church family functions.

Community groups such as AA or NA will resume in September once a representative of trustees meets with the group leader.

Bugfest Saturday

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center will celebrate Bugfest 2021on Saturday at the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center in Bartonsville in two sessions.

To register or for more information on Bug Fest, call the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center at 570-629-3061, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and some Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Breakfast inside

McMichaels UMC is offering its donation-only breakfast inside from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. All are welcome. The church is on the corner of Route 715 and White Church Road.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will next be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Distribution of food is being limited to drive up/pickup service only.

The center is seeking donations of ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.

Birthday celebration

The community is invited to the Legion’s birthday celebration on Saturday. The event runs from 3 to 9:30 p.m.

It will include face painting, raffles, barbecue, fireworks and more.

Tickets are required, but children under 12 get in for free.

Blood drive set

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is hosting a Miller-Keystone blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Communion offered

McMichaels UMC will serve Communion at its 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service. All are welcome to come and receive.

Legion meeting

The American Legion Riders monthly meeting is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 927, 646 Fairgrounds Road/Route 209 in Gilbert.

Effort UMC will confirm the youth who have completed the appropriate classes on Sunday during the 11 a.m. service.

Busy Legion

The American Legion Post Home in Gilbert will be a busy place Monday evening. Monday night bingo, an open community event, begins at 6:30 p.m. and the Sons of the American Legion will meet at 7 p.m., while on the following Wednesday, the Auxiliary will hold its meeting at 7 p.m.

Ross meeting

The next monthly meeting of the Ross Township supervisors is this coming Monday at 7 p.m. in light of the holiday this past week.

Annual meeting

The Operation: Touch of Home Inc., 2021 annual members meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927, located on Route 209, Gilbert.

In accordance with the group’s bylaws, notification is that proxy materials for the annual meeting are available on the group’s website at www.operationtouchofhome.org to download.

All completed, signed and dated forms must be received by President Tammy Gower or Vice President Maria Bentzoni via email at touchofhome@hotmail.com or via U.S. postal mail sent to Operation: Touch of Home, P.O. Box. 162, Brodheadsville, PA 18322, for receipt not later than 4 p.m. Eastern Time, July 13. Lastly, they may be given to any Operation: Touch of Home member who will be physically attending the meeting on July 13, and will deliver your proxy to the meeting.

WEPOSC meeting

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. July 14 at the Chestnuthill Park Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Conservation camp

Monroe County Conservation District and Monroe County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs is sponsoring a residential camp offered for teens ages 14 through 2021 high school graduates. The camp is being held from July 17-24.

Applications are being accepted for this, the 44th Monroe County Conservation Camp, held at Stony Acres Wildlife Sanctuary/Recreational Facility by the Monroe County Conservation District.

Special event set

The Chestnuthill Senior Center located at the Zion Lutheran Church Social Hall on Route 209 in Brodheadsville is the host site for a presentation for a swallow study through East Stroudsburg University about dysphagia (swallowing disorders) by the Dysphagia Warriors to be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on July 21.

The presentation will be given by Akila T. Rajappa, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-S, and LuAnn Batson-Magnuson Ph.D., CCC-SLP from ESU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

One may voluntarily participate in the research study by completing pre- and post-surveys. Participation is not required. One may attend the presentation for informational purposes only.

ESU offers help on campus to anyone in the community with communication disorders. The ESU Speech & Hearing Center has been offering speech-language and hearing services for over 50 years.

Weekly events

McMichaels UMC has several weekly events that are open to those who need them.

They include an outdoor Bible study that will be held around a campfire and will include hot dogs every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and Serenity Narcotics Anonymous meets every Monday at 6:30 at the church. It is open to all who need to talk and fellowship with those who understand what one is experiencing and get the help needed. The meeting is conducted by a professional and is confidential.

Also meeting at the church is an AA meeting every Wednesday at noon and every Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Anyone requiring assistance with this issue is asked join one or both of these meetings to receive the help needed, gathering with others who understand.

WPCL walking track

Senior nutrition

Via the Monroe County Seniors’ Express Times comes word that older adults residing in Monroe County who are 60 years of age or older by Dec. 31, 2021, who meet the income guidelines: $23,828 for one person in the household; or $32,227 for two people in the household, are eligible to participate in the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program.
