Carbon County court — DUI

A total of 10 defendants in driving under the influence cases were sentenced on Tuesday in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika imposed sentences on the following:

State prison

David John Czonstka, 26, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to serve one to seven years in a state correctional institution on two counts of DUI. The term is the same on both counts, running concurrently. He previously entered guilty pleas.

He was also ordered to pay fines totaling $5,000, license suspended for 36 months, supply a DNA sample, render a total of 100 hours of community service when paroled and successfully complete a long-term inpatient rehabilitation program.

He was arrested on Oct. 1, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Fireline Road in Palmerton; and on Jan. 10, 2020, by state police along Ore Street in Bowmanstown. Both were for DUI of a controlled substance.

He is currently serving a state prison term at SCI Chester for another DUI in Lehigh County. His sentencing was done via video from the state prison.

Two counts

Clemens Visnosky IV, 23, of Palmerton, was sentenced to serve a total of seven days to 12 months in prison on two DUI charges for which he previously entered pleas.

He was arrested on Jan. 3, 2020, by Palmerton police along Fifth Street. A test revealed a 0.10 BAC. He was arrested on Sept. 26, 2020, by state police at Lehighton along Route 248. A test revealed a 0.17 BAC.

He was also ordered to pay fines totaling $800, two years license suspension and render 50 hours of community service.

He will begin serving the prison term at 6 p.m. on June 18 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.

Other cases

Patrick Ryan Conklin, 26, of Summit Hill, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year and render 25 hours of community service. On a summary offense of turning movements, he was fined $25. He previously pleaded to the charges.

The DUI of a controlled substance occurred on April 1, 2019, filed by state police at Lehighton along Apple Street in Bowmanstown. In a second case, filed Jan. 25, 2019, Lansford police stopped him along Parkview Road. In that case a DUI charge was dropped in a plea deal.

He will begin serving the prison term at noon on June 21. He was given credit for one day served and will have two more days to serve.

James Michael Welsch, 31, of Forest City, Susquehanna County, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, one year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service. On a charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana, he was fined $100. He previously pleaded to the charges.

He was arrested on Nov. 27, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Maury Road in Penn Forest Township, for DUI of a controlled substance and the possession count.

He began the jail term immediately.

David M. Roberts, 52, of Slatington, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000 and one year license suspension.

He was arrested on May 28, 2020, by state police at Lehighton, for DUI of a controlled substance along Route 209 in Mahoning Township.

He was given credit for three days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and paroled.

Christopher Matthew Valek, 33, of Montgomery County, was sentenced to serve three to 23 months in the county prison on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child and 90 days to 60 months on a DUI count with the terms running concurrently. He previously pleaded to the charges. He is currently an inmate at the Montgomery County prison.

He was arrested on Nov. 2, 2018, by Palmerton police along Delaware Avenue for DUI of a controlled substance. Police said he had two children in the vehicle, ages 9 and 11.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, supply a DNA sample, render 100 hours of community service when paroled, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and attend and successfully complete an outpatient program. He was given 90 days credit for time already served.

Guilty pleas

The following defendants entered guilty pleas Tuesday.

Sheldan Jessica Schleicher, 24, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of scattering rubbish for an incident on May 31, 2019, filed by state police at Lehighton for an incident in the area of Beltzville State Park. She threw a bottle from a vehicle. In a plea deal, a charge of DUI was dropped.

In a second case involving a DUI charge she was placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program for a year. She was arrested on June 19, 2019 by state police at Lehighton.

She was assessed $650 for the cost of the program and ordered to render 50 hours of community service and her license suspended for 60 days.

Sean Patrick Frost, 36, of Old Forge, Lackawanna County, pleaded to one count of DUI of a controlled substance. He was arrested on Sept. 25, 2020, by state police at Lehighton.

Sentencing was deferred so Frost can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Ricardo Ramirez-Diaz, 33, of Lehighton, was placed in the ARD program for a year on a DUI charge. He was arrested on Dec. 10, 2020, by state police at Lehighton.

He was assessed $600 and ordered to render 50 hours of community service and his license suspended for 60 days.

Michael John Kleintop, 45, of Palmerton, was also placed in the ARD program for a year on a DUI charge. He was arrested on July 4, 2020, by state police at Lehighton.

He was assessed $650 and ordered to render 50 hours of community service and license suspended for 60 days.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
